The civil war that is happening RIGHT NOW: BURMA / MYANMAR.

Twenty years since its last national election--and with that election's winner under house arrest for nearly every day of that twenty-year span--the nation of Myanmar (mee-an-mar--formerly BURMA) has just held a national election. One of Burma's internationally respected critics says the election "merely aims to legitimize the horrible regime of General Than Shwe, who has ruled his country with an iron fist."

Here is a very good summary of a real, very jacked-up situation:

jon stewart on CNN's Crossfire in 2004

This clip only increases in importance as money and media continue to drive our political consciousness. It's very high live-TV drama, as well as a great example of the power of newsmedia criticism--just watch as both hosts squirm, and one loses his composure completely in the twelve minutes that led to the show being permanently pulled off the air!  (Please also see the Special Section on Jon Stewart below.)

News media links

The best Mon-Fri daily national/international news program in the United States:
Democracy Now, hosted by Amy Goodman (avail. online 24-7)

--and the network her show is based at, KPFA / Pacifica Radio, 94.1fm in the Bay Area--totally listener-supported radio
One very interesting show on KPFA is Hard Knock Radio—on the radio in the Bay Area Mon-Fri on 94.1fm, 4-5pm and online anywhere, anytime at:
http://kpfa.org/archive/show/35--The show starts with the national news headlines, followed by interviews, reporting, and sometimes music with an urban, human rights focus.
BIAS NOTICE: KPFA (Pacifica radio and internet) is seen by many as having a progressive-liberal-activist bias, mainly among believers in the “liberal vs. conservative” false dichotomy .)
Fox News’ Shepard Smith and Geraldo Rivera reporting from New Orleans during Katrina:
A brief, intense report during a human tragedy, and a rare day for Fox http://www.spike.com/video/geraldo-rivera/2678976
“60 Minutes” segment about the Islamic center being developed in New York

Radio interview with Stewart on NPR Oct. 4 2010. (National Public Radio) “I have become increasingly unnerved by the depth of corruption that exists at many different levels. I'm less upset with politicians than [with] the media. . . somebody's gotta be the zookeeper.”

(From 20 minutes to 30 is the most interesting part of the interview regarding media.)
